  1. Know the Fire District 18 phone number: 360-877-9882, Fax 877-6220, e-mail: MCFD18.
  2. Remove Silal! This stuff burns rapidly when wet, when underground, and in the middle of its growing season. Silal info.
  3. On smaller lots you should ensure there is firefighting access from at least one side of your house. The guideline is to keep a clearing of at least 30 feet around your house for fire fighting equipment.
  4. Space the trees you plant carefully.
  5. Follow Mason County burn guidelines:
    • A written permit is not required for residential burning.
    • Maximum pile size is four (4) feet in diameter.
    • A minimum 10-foot firebreak must be constructed around each pile with a 20-foot vertical clearance from overhanging branches.
    • Only one fire at a time per parcel.
    • Burn pile must be at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible material. Materials to be burned shall not be moved from one site to another. All material must originate from the property on which the burning is to occur.
    • The fire must not create a nuisance from smoke, obscure visibility on public roads and highways, or endanger life and property.
    • No residential fire is to be commenced before dawn and no material is to be added after dusk.
    • A person and equipment capable of extinguishing the fire must be in constant attendance at the site while burning.
  6. Remove other "ladder fuels". They link the underbrush and the tree tops.
  7. Create "fuelbreak" - - - driveways, gravel walkways, or lawns. You can get permission to clear brush from adjacent greenbelts by submitting a request to LCMC. You will be responsible for disposal.
  8. Prune tree limbs so the lowest is between 6' - 10' from the gound.
  9. Remove leaf clutter from your roof and yard.
  10. Remove dead or overhanging branches.
  11. Store firewood away from your house.
  12. Refuel garden equipment carefully.
  13. If you smoke, use your ashtray.
  14. Store and use flammable liquids properly.
  15. Dispose of cuttings and debris promptly, according to local regulations. Contact Mason County Fire Marshal for burning rules.
  16. Check your generator and/or fuel hose to be sure it is in good repair.
  17. Don't keep combustible materials under decks or elevated porches.
  18. Make trellises of non-flammable metal.
  19. Have at least two ground-level doors as safety exits.
  20. Keep at least two means of escape (either a door/window) in each room.
  21. Mark your driveway and access roads clearly. Mason County requires a posted address on houses and at driveway entrance if house isn't visible from the road. Addresses are assigned by Mason County after $140 payment.
  22. Prevent sparks from entering your house by covering vents with wire mesh no larger than 1/8". Also, put a 1/8" screen around your chimney exhaust.
  23. When possible, use construction materials that are fire-resistant or non-combustible.
